Pulmonary Hypertension Treatment

In 2018, the Pulmonary Hypertension Association designated UVA's Pulmonary Hypertension Center as a Center of Comprehensive Care.  We offer a full range of treatments and diagnoses related to the management of pulmonary hypertension. We have one of the few clinics in Virginia offering treatment with oral, inhalation and intravenous therapies for disease management.

As these are long-term treatments of a chronic disease, most patients with pulmonary hypertension will have a lifetime relationship with the healthcare team that treats them.

We're a designated Center of Comprehensive Care for Pulmonary Hypertension. We offer:

  • A cohesive team comprised of dedicated cardiac and pulmonary experts
  • Collaborative relationships with other specialists, including genetics and palliative care
  • Connections to the latest research and technology

Causes of Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension develops when the pressure of the blood vessels in the lungs grows too high.

This pressure can develop from underlying issues, like:

  • Sarcoidosis
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Connective tissue disorders
  • Portal hypertension
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Drug or toxin-induced hypertension
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Other disease processes

Treating Pulmonary Hypertension

At UVA, we tailor your treatment to how advanced your disease is and the nature of its cause and progression. If medications and lifestyle changes don't address the disease, we may recommend considering dual lung and heart transplants to improve your quality of life.
